Good morning and Happy Friday friends! It’s almost the 4th of July! This is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate with family and friends. In this week’s Friday Food Finds, I’m excited to share with you my review of The Better Bean Company and Agua Fruit Essence.
The Better Bean Company
I recently discovered this gem of a company via Facebook and instantly became intrigued to give their products a try. After checking out Better Bean Co.’s website, I was eager to try their new products. I connected with Hannah “The Bean Queen” and she was more than happy to assist me with trying some of their products. I knew that my local Wegman’s carried the beans, so I set out immediately to pick up 3 of the bean products to try.
The Better Bean Company, based in Portland Oregon, was founded by Keith Kullberg. It is a locally grown line of freshly made beans that are all-natural, vegan, gluten free and soy-free. The company manifesto is pretty awesome. As quoted from their website: “We, the Better Bean Company, exist to bring back beans, in all of their age-defying, cholesterol-reducing, cancer-fighting glory. And we’re doing it by making them as succulent and tempting as they are hearty and nutritious. We’re doing it with fresh, local ingredients and spices, and we’re doing it with gourmet recipes. Because these are not just beans.”
What are Better Beans? They are perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned beans packed into 14-ounce BPA free containers. You can enjoy them just as they come as a protein-packed side dish or add them to other dishes and recipes.
All of The Better Bean Products are:
- All natural – no artificial ingredients, flavors or preservatives.
- Local. Our beans and many other ingredients sourced from NW farms.
- Freshly-prepared and refrigerated. Not canned.
- Skillet sautéed in high oleic safflower oil for rich authentic flavor.
- Vegan. Gluten and Soy Free.
- Premium ingredients including organic beans and high oleic safflower oil.
- Outstanding flavor!
Better Bean uncanny refried black beans
I made Chicken and Black Bean enchiladas for dinner. The Uncanny Refried Black Beans have great flavor and a bit of heat from serrano and habanero- perfect for my spicy palate!
I love an ingredients list that I can read and recognize!
INGREDIENTS: BLACK BEANS, WATER, ONION, TOMATILLO, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, SAFFLOWER OIL, JALAPENO PEPPER, SERRANO PEPPER, SEA SALT, GARLIC, HABANERO PEPPER
roasted chipotle bean dip
I love a good smoky and spicy bean dip! This tastes just like homemade! The spicy bean dip paired well with my Jalapeno Cheddar bean chips. I love how the lime juice provides the right balance and acidity to this medium heat dip!
INGREDIENTS: ORGANIC RED BEANS, WATER, ONION, TOMATILLO, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, SAFFLOWER OIL, LIME JUICE, JALAPENO PEPPER, ROASTED CHIPOTLE PEPPER, SEA SALT, GARLIC.
cuban black beans
My husband absolutely loves black bean burgers so my immediate thought was to use these beans for that purpose! The flavor is mildly spicy with a faint smoky and sauteed onion flavor.
INGREDIENTS: BLACK BEANS, WATER, ONION, POBLANO PEPPER, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, SAFFLOWER OIL, LIME JUICE, SEA SALT, GARLIC, CORIANDER, OREGANO
Agua Fruit Essence
Agua Fruit Essence is a new line of zero-calorie, unsweetened waters infused with electrolytes. The waters are gluten free, vegan and non-gmo. They have six fun flavor varieties to choose from: Cranberry + Grapefruit, Grape + Watermelon, Lemon + Cucumber, Lime + Mint Mojito, Peach + Mango and Orange + Pineapple.
So what is the story around Agua. From their website: Call us crazy, our goal is simple, we believe that things can be done healthier, tastier, and more efficiently without sacrifice. We’re not here to give you wings, make you a monster, or give you any other kind of super power. We’re here to give you, you. That’s it. Because we believe that when you are at your best, you’re already a superhero.
I could not wait to make some fruit infused popsicles with this water! I simply chopped up some of my favorite fruit(mangoes, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries) and added them to the popsicle molds. Pour your water over the fruit and pop into the freezer for a few hours or overnight. These are quite refreshing on a hot summer day!
I used the Lime + Mint Mojito to make some caribbean inspired quinoa. I replaced the water or broth that I normally would use for my quinoa and substituted the Lime Mint Mojito infused water. The result was quinoa that had a very subtle lime flavor. I added some coconut stevia drops and unsweetened shredded coconut flakes along with some chopped almonds to the quinoa for some extra crunch. I made a coconut crusted chickpea chicken breast to round out the meal. Look at how yummy this turned out!
Who is Agua Fruit Essence perfect for? Just about anyone really! This would be perfect for someone seeking to find an alternative to drinking diet soda. It’s also pretty amazing, for those that struggle with or do not like the taste of plain water but really place value on good health. There are days that I personally struggle with getting 8 or more glasses of water in per day.
I truly enjoyed all of the flavors but the Grape + Watermelon would have to be my top pick for this week’s Friday Food Finds! Also, I love the beautiful packaging- very appealing to the eye. I was asked several times at work what I was drinking!
