Friday Food Finds – New Enlightened Marshmallow Treats Review

Happy Friday friends! Prepare to be “Enlightened” by one of my favorite companies! Already being familiar with this brand, I was excited when I received an email ahead of the launch for their brand new product – Enlightened Marshmallow Treats. This is Enlightened’s healthier take on the childhood favorite- rice krispy treats!

Enlightened Marshmallow Treats are:

  • 70% less sugar than “regular” marshmallow treats
  • 15g of protein per treat
  • 8-9g of fiber per treat
  • Made with brown rice and a milk & soy protein blend (for protein and crunch!)
  • No artificial sweeteners, dyes, or other ingredients

They are all gluten free, peanut free, and 3 out of the four flavors are non-GMO (Birthday Cake being the exception).

Let’s talk flavors!

Original

It made sense to start off with the Original flavor. This truly is a very large treat! I’m only holding a half in this picture. At around 270 calories and 48-50 grams of carbs per bar, this is much higher than your typical protein bar/snack on the market. I’m not so sure I would want to use the bulk of my day’s carbohydrates on one bar unless I were eating it for pre or post workout. You could easily eat half and still feel very satisfied.

The texture is spot on but I miss the gooeyness of true marshmallow. The flavor reminded me of a less sweeter version of my favorite Snap Nutrition Vanilla Marshmallow bar. Unfortunately, the Original was just a little too bland for my tastebuds.

Apple Cinnamon

Apple and Cinnamon together just scream fall flavor to me. The cinnamon flavor is very subtle so for those that do not like an intense cinnamon taste. The small bite I took had a small chunk of apple in it- yum! This reminded me in some odd way of an apple cinnamon rice cake but way better. To get all fancy with your bar, this would be delicious topped with some cream cheese spread or crumbled up and enjoyed as cereal with your favorite milk!

Birthday Cake

I’m basically a sucker for anything birthday cake flavored. Enlightened Birthday Cake ice cream is my favorite so in my mind, this also had to be good. Upon opening the wrapper, you do get a nice cake scent and to my delight, a generous portion of sprinkles. The first bite tasted like Birthday Cake, but after that, not so much. This had more of a buttery vanilla flavor with colorful sprinkles added. Sadly, this was my least favorite of the flavors.

Double Chocolate

Think protein treat meets Cocoa Pebbles cereal only less sweet and much healthier for you! If you look closely, you will see there is no shortage of heavenly chocolate chips on top! Amazing texture with just enough crunch and chocolate flavor. This is a must try especially if you love chocolate as much as I do! Enlightened nailed it with this flavor!

To rank them in order of flavor preference: Double Chocolate, Apple Cinnamon, Original, Birthday Cake.

As much as I am a fan of the Enlightened Ice Cream and the Roasted Broad Bean Crisps, I’m not so sure I would purchase these on a regular basis with the exception of my top two flavors.

The marshmallow treats are available for online order via Enlightened’s website or you can try the store locator to find them locally.

Have you tried the new Enlightened Marhmallow treats yet? Do you have a favorite flavor? Please share – I would love to hear from you!

One quick sidenote… Sadly, these treats do contain a soy protein blend which meant for me, I only sampled a bite of each but definitely enough to get a true read on the flavor.

  1. I’m glad you included the sidenote at the end – I was worried that you tried these, since I remember reading that they have soy protein!

    • Happy Friday Liz! I’m hoping others catch that sidenote as well. It’s a darn shame that soy isolate needed to be added. I’m hoping Enlightened keeps their customers in mind when it comes to intolerances- gluten free is great but soy is just as much as an issue these days for a lot of people! Have a wonderful weekend! xo

  2. I have tried original, chocolate and birthday cake! I think they could probably all use a little tweaking but I actually liked the original best so far I think! I look forward to trying apple cinnamon and cream cheese would be a great idea! Maybe even sweetened cinnamon cream cheese lol!

    • Hey Megan! I agree, they were good but could still use some tweaking. I wish they did not contain the soy isolate- hoping they can also swap that out since that’s high on the intolerance list for me! Definitely do the cream cheese with the apple cinnamon!!

    • I hear you Jody! It’s disappointing that one of my favorite companies has to add soy to their products. Most companies are using sunflower lecithin these days instead!
