Friday Food Finds – Koog Bar Review

Happy Friday friends! My hope each week is to introduce you to new products and encourage a nutritious well-balanced approach to food. I was recently introduced to Koog Bar through a social media contest that I won earlier this year. Today, I’m sharing a review for these “new to me” protein bars.

Protein bars are a quick, on-the-go option; but they definitely aren’t all created equal. Unfortunately many protein bars on the market are filled with artificial flavorings, highly processed sugars, oils and unpronounceable ingredients. Koog’s mission is to provide their customers with a real food protein bar that works!

Koog Bars are:

  • Gluten free, soy free, contain no preservatives, artificial sweeteners or refined sugars
  • Made with ingredients you can recognize and pronounce
  • Packed with 13-14 grams of protein
  • High in antioxidants, high in Omega 3’s

Now onto the tasting!

Blueberry Sunflower Agave

Sweet blueberries along with both sunflower and almond butter gives this bar it’s delicious and indulgent flavor! One of Koog’s two vegan bars, it makes an excellent choice for individuals with dairy, soy and/or gluten allergies. The protein component comes from using both pea and rice proteins. This bar is delicious on its own or can be an awesome complement to your yogurt! Blueberry Sunflower was by far my favorite flavor!

Ingredients: Sunflower Seed Butter, Almond Butter, Pea Protein, Rice Protein, Dates, Blueberries, Agave Nectar, Hemp Seed, Flax Meal, Almond Bran, Almonds, Sesame Seed, Sea Salt.

Out of the wrapper, the texture doesn’t look too amazing, but fortunately it has the taste and consistency of a soft, crumbly brownie! If you have a sweet tooth, this bar will probably not be sweet enough for you. I prefer a richer, stronger, sweeter chocolate flavor. Not sure if you picked up on my earlier mention of the bars being somewhat crumbly. If you enjoy your bars on the go, I would not recommend eating this one in the car unless you plan to eat it straight out of the wrapper. It can get quite messy!

Ingredients: Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Dates, Whey Protein Isolate, Honey, Hemp Seeds, Almonds, Cocoa Powder, Flax Meal, Almond Bran, Sesame Seeds, Sea Salt.

I literally love having a bar with coffee as a snack mid-morning or mid-afternoon. With hints of coffee flavor, the mocha comes from the addition of Costa Rican coffee. Besides, tasting very similar to the chocolate bar, it simply did not pack enough of a coffee taste for my liking. Overall, my least favorite of the flavors.

Ingredients: Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Dates, Whey Protein Isolate, Honey, Hemp Seeds, Almonds, Cocoa Powder, Costa Rican Coffee, Flax Meal, Almond Bran, Sesame Seeds, Sea Salt.

Honey Almond

Two of my favorite ingredients combined into one sweet and salty bar. Loved the fresh honey taste of this bar! The sea salt is a fantastic addition on top along with a generous portion of hemp and sesame seeds.

Ingredients: Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Dates, Whey Protein Isolate, Honey, Hemp Seeds, Almonds, Flax Meal, Almond Bran, Sesame Seeds, Sea Salt.

Overall, a great product with an impressive ingredient list. Sugar content is a little high compared to other bars, although they come from natural ingredients. I enjoyed the Blueberry Sunflower Agave and Honey Almond bars. Had I not won these through a contest, I would most likely not purchase the bars on my own.
