Friday Food Finds – Maxine’s Heavenly Cookies Review

It’s Friday, and time for another review! Today I’m talking about one of my favorite kinds of product to review here on the blog – cookies! I recently had the opportunity to try a healthier line of cookies from a company called Maxine’s Heavenly. For all of my cookie loving friends, be prepared to be taken to cookie heaven, no pun intended.

About Maxine’s Heavenly:

The company is named after co-founder Tim Miller’s mother Maxine, who took great pleasure in creating delicious sweet treats for the family. As Tim got older and started making cookies for his children, he wanted to preserve the joy of his mother’s baking, but adapt it for a healthier lifestyle. So he took out the processed flours and sugars, gluten and animal products and replaced them with healthy, plant-based alternatives, while retaining the sumptuous flavors.

Maxine’s Heavenly Cookies are certified gluten-free, vegan, soy-free, dairy-free and non-GMO certified through the Non-GMO Project. The cookies are made from a healthy base of whole grain oats, brown rice flour, flax seed, and sunflower lecithin. Sweetened with organic coconut sugar, none of the cookies contain artificial flavors, colors or preservatives; just clean wholesome ingredients.

There are four flavors to choose from; Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chocolate Chunk, Almond Chocolate Chunk and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk.

The nutritional profile for all four flavors are actually quite similar:

Calories: 120- 130 per cookie/ 8 cookies per bag

Fat: 6-7 grams

Carbohydrates: 14-15 grams

Protein: 2-3 grams

Sugar: 6-7 grams

So let’s get to tasting!

Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin

This is a common flavor for most cookie companies and Maxine’s version is a worthy addition to the world of oatmeal raisin cookies. These taste and smell just like a soft baked oatmeal raisin cookie fresh out of your grandmother’s oven. Although these cookies aren’t quite as big as I expected(about 2 inches in diameter), they are still quite dense and filling. Each bite had the perfect portion of plump chewy raisins with a subtle hint of cinnamon spice. I decided to warm one up in the microwave for a few seconds and wow, what a game changer. Perfect for a mid-morning coffee break or afternoon treat.

Chocolate Chocolate Chunk

Cookies can be such a magical food, especially when they’re studded with chocolate chunks. This cookie is for all of my chocolate lovers. My taste buds did quite the happy dance with this flavor. Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. Between the combination of cocoa powder, pure chocolate extract and the plentiful amount of chocolate chunks, Maxine’s should kindly look at renaming this flavor to Triple Chocolate Chunk. Delicious and decadent, these cookies didn’t last very long in my house.

Almond Chocolate Chunk

The generous portion of chocolate chunks and almond pieces was a very welcome sight. And yes, if you look close enough, that is a whole almond chunk that you can see in there. Upon opening the bag, I immediately picked up on the heavenly sweet scent of almond. Almond extract can make or break a cookie by either being too strong or add some delicious flavor. Fortunately it was the latter. I loved the way the almond added a touch of sweet marzipan-like flavor to the cookie. Although almond is the predominant flavor, it wasn’t too overwhelming and it paired quite nicely with all of the chocolatey chunks.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk

You haven’t had a peanut butter cookie until you’ve had one loaded with chocolate chunks. This flavor showcases a perfect pairing of peanut butter and chocolate. The chocolate chunks are decadent but aren’t too sweet that they overpower the peanut butter flavor. Grab a glass of cold milk, hide in the closet and savor these tasty little morsels. Dangerously addictive, Peanut Butter Chocoloate Chunk was hands down my favorite flavor!

Overall, Maxine’s Heavenly definitely broke the mold of what healthy snacks should taste like. Whether you follow a gluten free lifestyle or just enjoy a healthier treat, Maxine’s Heavenly has a flavor to please just about any palate. Of the four flavors, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk is my favorite followed by Chocolate Chocolate Chunk, Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin and Almond Chocolate Chunk.

Maxine’s Heavenly Cookies can be ordered through their online store, via Amazon and found in select retailers.

They also have a Cookie Club, where a monthly delivery of baked goodness will arrive at your doorstep to keep your pantry full of their delicious cookies.
