While I love baking and trying my own recipes, I’m not above using a good baking mix when I’m craving breads, pancakes or brownies. Today, I’m sharing some new baking mixes from Other Foods.
Other Foods is a grain-free, gluten-free and paleo-friendly baking mix company based in Portland Oregon. All of their products are made entirely without grains, soy or corn, baking powder, nuts, xanthan gum or guar gum, refined sugar, stabilizers, or preservatives. They use only top-quality and whole food ingredients like coconut sugar and cassava flour in all of their mixes.
Let’s take a quick minute to talk about what Cassava flour is exactly. Cassava is a tuber grown in South America, known to many Americans as yucca or manioc, and is the plant from which tapioca (flour) is made. The flour itself has a very clean neutral flavor with a texture that lends well to baking things like brownies, cookies and bread.
Let’s get started!
Cake and Brownie Mix
It was a pretty easy to decision to make brownies with the mix since my hubby and I are both such brownie fans. The mix was so easy to use! Simply add 2 eggs, coconut oil and vanilla to the mix. I added some dairy free mini chocolate chips to the batter and sprinkled a few on top. The result? A dark, dense and fudgy brownie that tasted straight up amazing right out of the pan! They were stored for about 2 days in the refrigerator and were still just as moist as day one.
Ingredients: Organic coconut palm sugar, premium cassava flour, cocoa powder, naturally mined sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sea salt.
Sandwich Bread Mix
I’m not the best bread maker, so I was pretty excited to try the mix. The directions are straight forward; just add eggs, milk, oil (I used an olive and avocado oil blend) and apple cider vinegar. On a whim, I decided to add a tablespoon of manuka honey to add a little bit of sweetness. The result was a beautiful loaf of dense, flavorful bread. I used a few slices for sandwiches but saved the remainder for a Blueberry French Toast Bake recipe that I’ll be sharing soon!
Ingredients: Premium cassava flour, organic coconut palm sugar, golden flaxseed, tapioca, organic coconut flour (tree nuts), naturally mined sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sea salt.
Pancake and Waffle Mix
It’s been feeling a little bit more like fall in the south so I decided to add some sauteed cinnamon apples(Be sure to save some for the topping!) to my waffle batter. Even though the recipe instructions do not call for it, I allowed my batter to sit for aboout 3-5 minutes to get nice and thick. The cooking time was longer than “normal” but the end result was pretty good. Slightly sweet and golden in flavor, one serving made one nice size waffle that kept me fueled for hours.
Ingredients: Premium cassava flour, organic coconut palm sugar, arrowroot powder, sea salt, naturally mined sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), cinnamon.
Overall, Other Foods performed well and are mixes that I would keep on hand. Not only are they delicious, but perfect for those that may suffer from multiple food allergies.
