Friday Food Finds- YouBar Review

Happy Friday friends! I recently had the opportunity to do a product review for YouBar, a company that allows you to design a custom energy bar tailored to your personal taste and nutritional needs. YouBar has a fun and innovative website that allows you to create your own nutrition bar. You get to choose exactly which ingredients you want in your bar along with picking a unique name. How cool is that it!  YouBar also has a selection of popular bars you can choose from should you decide not to build your own.

YouBar sent me 9 of their most popular bars to try. I received the Chocolate Almond, Cashew Cherry, Cookie Dough, Lemon Cookie, Caramel Macchiato, Vanilla Chocolate Chip, Vanilla Almond, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Cherry Cashew Chia flavors.

About YouBar

YouBar stems from an original idea that mother and son, Ava Bise and Anthony Flynn, dreamed up. They already created custom protein bars at home to meet their taste, health and allergy needs and they quickly recognized that there would be a wider market for them. The pair took over a commercial kitchen in Los Angeles, and YouBar was born.

YouBars are:

High protein / low net carbs
Paleo (made using egg white protein and/or whey protein)
Vegan (made using pea protein)
High fiber
Gluten-free
All-natural whole food ingredients

Vegan High Protein Low Sugar Bars

Chocolate Almond

YOU BAR CHOCOLATE ALMOND

The Chocolate Almond protein bar blends pea protein and 100% cacao chocolate chips with superfood ingredients like chlorella, green tea and spirulina. The chocolate flavor shines through along with plenty of almond bits throughout the bar. However, I could not get past the fact that this bar tasted a bit chalky to me. I even came back to this bar a little later, to give it a second try. Unfortunately it still tasted a bit grainy/chalky.

INGREDIENTS: Almonds, Pea Protein, Soluble Tapioca Fiber, Chicory Root Fiber, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), 100% Cacao Chocolate Chips, Cocoa, Cashews, Coconut Oil, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Lecithin, Greens Blend (Green Tea, Spirulina, Chlorella), Sea Salt, Stevia.

Vanilla Chocolate Chip

YOU BAR VANILLA CHOCOLATE CHIP

The Vanilla Chocolate Chip blends pea protein with cashews, almonds, green tea and spirulina. Oddly enough, even though the bar is marketed to be vanilla, the predominant taste to me was all chocolate. I’m not complaining by any means, I loved the flavor of this bar and plus it had plenty of chocolate chips throughout!

INGREDIENTS: Almonds, Pea Protein, Soluble Tapioca Fiber, Chicory Root Fiber, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), 100% Cacao Chocolate Chips, Cashews, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Flavors, Greens Blend (Green Tea, Spirulina, Chlorella), Sea Salt, Stevia.

Cherry Cashew Chia

CHERRY CASHEW CHIA YOU BAR

The Cherry Cashew Chia combines pea protein with antioxidant-rich cherries, and omega-3 packed chia seeds for a delicious treat. This was my favorite of the two cherry bars that I tried. I loved the flavor and the softer texture that this bar had to offer.

INGREDIENTS: Cashews, Pea Protein, Soluble Tapioca Fiber, Chicory Root Fiber, Cherries, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), Chia Seeds, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Lecithin, Greens Blend (Green Tea, Spirulina, Chlorella), Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Stevia.

Vegan Whole Food Bars

Cherry Cashew

YOU BAR CHERRY CASHEW

If you’re looking for a tangy treat, look no further. The Cherry Cashew bar has just the perfect amount of sweetness from the dried cherries and dates. The texture of this bar reminded me slightly of a Larabar.

INGREDIENTS: Cashews, Dates, Agave Nectar, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), Cherries, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt.

Caramel Macchiato

YOU BAR CARAMEL MACCHIATO

One bite of this bar and I felt like I was eating the Starbucks version of a Caramel Macchiato latte. You can pick up on both the coffee and caramel flavors in this bar! LOVED IT! Simple ingredient list and would pair well with your morning coffee.

INGREDIENTS: Cashews, Dates, Agave Nectar, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), Coffee, Sea Salt, Natural Flavors.

Chocolate Peanut Butter

YOU BAR CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER

The Chocolate Peanut Butter did not pack enough peanut butter flavor for my liking. The predominate taste in this bar for me was the dates and then the chocolate. I love dates but was definitely expecting a richer chocolate and more intense peanut butter taste.

INGREDIENTS: Cashews, Dates, Agave Nectar, Pea Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Tapioca Starch), 100% Cacao Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter, Cocoa, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt.

Grass Fed Whey Protein Bars

Cookies N’ Cream

COOKIES N CREAM YOU BAR #2

The Cookies N’ Cream bar tastes just like it sounds! It had the perfect amount of chocolate cookie pieces throughout. The addition of the protein crisps gave it some crunch. I really liked the softer texture of these bars. The Cookies N’ Cream has more of a taffy like texture and chewiness. This bar was definitely a favorite!

INGREDIENTS:  Protein Blend (Grass Fed Whey Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate), Non-GMO Prebiotic Corn Fiber, Dairy Protein Crisps (Whey Protein Concentrate, Rice Flour), Water, Almonds, Vegetable Glycerin, Almonds, Sunflower Oil, Chocolate Cookie Pieces(Rice Flour,Sugar, Tapioca Starch, Palm Oil, Cocoa Processed with alkali, Corn Starch, Salt, Chocolate Liquor, Natural Flavor, Sodium Bicar-bonatee, Soy Lecithin), Erythritol, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Stevia, Sucralose.

Lemon Cookie

LEMON COOKIE YOU BAR

Made with just four simple ingredients, the lemon bar was a little on the dry side and crumbled very easy. To me this bar lacked a true lemon flavor. I love a good lemon protein bar and felt a bit let down by this flavor.

INGREDIENTS: Organic Cashew Butter, Whey Protein Isolate, Organic Agave Nectar, Pure Lemon Oil.

Vanilla Almond

YOU BAR VANILLA ALMOND

Vanilla Almond reminded me slightly of a rice crispy bar .The light vanilla taste that you get from this bar is a real treat! Throw in a little crunch from the protein crisps and almonds and you’ve got yourself a piece of protein bar heaven. Very filling as an afternoon snack and held me over until dinner time!

INGREDIENTS:  Protein Blend (Grass Fed Whey Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate), Non-GMO Prebiotic Corn Fiber, Dairy Protein Crisps (Whey Protein Concentrate, Rice Flour), Water, Almonds, Vegetable Glycerin, Almonds, Sunflower Oil, Erythritol, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Stevia.

I had fun trying all of the bars they sent me. Overall, I enjoyed the Vegan Whole Food and Grass-Fed Whey bars the most. The Vegan High Protein/Low Sugar bars texture and flavor wise were a little too chalky for me with the exception of the Cherry Cashew Chia; which happened to be one of my favorites!

If you don’t feel comfortable building your own bar, you can chose from a long list of already made popular bars. You can purchase YouBar directly from their on-line store.

  1. Such a fun protein bar company, with all of the customization! No doubt though that the chalkiness was at least partially due to the prominence of pea protein 🙁 Glad that you were able to enjoy at least some of the bar flavors. If I could create my own bar = White Chocolate Butterscotch. I’m obsessed with those flavors, haha. Happy Friday, Wendy! xo

    • Happy Saturday Liz! YouBar was definitely a new company to me! I stumbled upon them a while ago and finally decided to reach out. I love your White Chocolate Butterscotch combination. I remember growing up eating those butterscotch candies as a kid! That is definitely a flavor that never gets consideration for protein bars. Thank you again for following along! I always appreciate it! Have a great weekend! xo
